FORT ZUMWALT SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL: 42

BALLWIN  Like the rest of her team, the shots for McCluer North senior guard Kortni Collins just weren't falling Friday.

Until she needed it most, that is, even if she didn't have faith in it until the very end.

Collins floated in a runner with 3.1 seconds left to give McCluer North a 43-42 win over Fort Zumwalt South to capture the championship of the Parkway West Tournament.

“It felt good to hit it, but I didn't think it was going to go in,” Collins said. “I'm glad it did. It went in and we're the champions.”

Collins' runner put an end to a game that was tied at 34 after regulation and featured McCluer North (9-6) trailing by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter after a technical foul on North coach Pat Daugherty resulted in a free throw and 3-pointer by Zumwalt South sophomore guard Sofia Popp.

“In my opinion, my girls needed to know I was supporting them 100 percent,” Daugherty said. “I just wanted to get all of them fired up a little. I didn't think it would work like that, but I am glad it did. On that last (scoring) play, I knew we just had to give it Kortni and get the heck out of her way. She's an athlete and she's done it all season for us.”

A free throw by senior guard Ymahni Jones with 25.2 seconds left in regulation tied the game and forced overtime, where a pair of baskets from freshman guard Michelle Owens staked McCluer North to the lead before Zumwalt South (8-5) recaptured the edge on a pair of free throws by junior forward Hannah Karl.

Zumwalt South coach Mike Schneider said one thing could have swung the outcome in the team's favor.

“Free throws,” said Schneider, whose team was 13 of 22 from the line. “We really needed to hit more of them. That was a difference in the game.”

McCluer North was led by a pair of all-tournament selections in senior guard Anasha Hurst, who had 14 points; and Collins, who added 12.

Zumwalt South was led by 15 points from all-tournament selection Karl, as well as sophomore Hannah Warnecke. Popp also was named to the all-tournament team.
